Savile Row – Pinstripe

The Rebirth of the Suits’ Soul
With a combination of Plain’s simplicity and classic chalk stripes, Pinstripe is the most remarkable product out of Savile Row paper series, presenting a sense of maturity and staidness just like the impression of custom suits. Besides the photo of the Italian suit tailor, there is also a printed graphic tying instruction inside the paper sample’s appendix. The text printed on the right, meaning ‘ordinary people follow fashion, the presumptuous exaggerate it. People of good taste come to terms with it,’ is quoted from Italian author Abel Dufresne’s publication Pensieri, Massimo e characters in 1862. The quote proudly indicates how the Italians define the term ‘fashion’.
During my research for writing an introduction of Savile Row paper series, I could really feel the romantic yet persistent nature in Italian culture, as well as the fashion taste and pride embedded within Italian history. I believe that exploring the properties of papers and the cultural context behind the paper production is one of the charms that papers can give us.
